Sustainable Row was founded by Phillip Woods, who was born in Alabama and moved to Detroit at the age of 12. As a southerner, he was taken aback by the limited access to fresh and nutritious food in his new home. As an adult, he worked in low-income neighborhoods and witnessed firsthand the struggles of families who went hungry on a daily basis. He was particularly alarmed by the fact that many children had never tasted or even seen certain fruits and vegetables. This experience inspired him to start Sustainable Row.
As a community garden, our main objective is to offer education and assistance to those interested in urban gardening, as well as food preparation and preservation techniques like canning and freezing. Our ultimate mission is to foster self-sufficiency within the community. However, we understand that we cannot achieve this goal alone. Thus, we welcome you to join us and become a part of Sustainable Row today!
Our mission is to eliminate all produce deserts in the city, ensuring that everyone has access to fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables.
Our vision is to create sustainable gardening practices and make fruits and vegetables readily available, improving the overall health of the community in which we operate. We strive to empower individuals and communities to take control of their health through education, access to fresh produce, and sustainable gardening practices.
